Spanning just over two and a half years, the construction and completion of US Bank Stadium surpassed all expectations. While it may seem insignificant, builders completed the job six weeks ahead of schedule. It took just under three million work hours to complete the construction. During building, the site became a beacon of opportunity, generating over 8,000 construction jobs. At its peak, approximately 1,500 skilled workers converged on-site daily, bringing this architectural NFL sports and entertainment marvel to life.
US Bank Stadium opened on July 22, 2016, featuring a two-day public open house that drew just under 200,000 curious fans who walked through the gates. The inaugural sporting event soon followed on August 3, 2016. That event was not a Vikings game. It was the thrilling 2016 International Champions Cup clash between A.C. Milan and Chelsea. Music then took center stage, with a sold-out Luke Bryan concert on August 19, 2016. Just four days later, that show was followed by an exhilarating (and sold-out) Metallica performance on August 20. Since that time Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, Kenny Chesney, George Strait, and the Rolling Stones all played to sold-out audiences at U.S. Bank Stadium.
NFL sports history was etched into the stadium's foundation as the Minnesota Vikings secured their very first victory within their new home. The final score of the Vikings first game was 23-10, and it came against the Chargers on August 28, 2016. It would only be fitting that the Vikings clinched their inaugural regular-season win on September 18, 2016, defeating the Green Bay Packers with a riveting 17-14 final score.
In 2017, the US Bank Stadium was the perfect venue for ESPN's Summer X Games. It was such a success to have the X Games held there, that ESPN extended the annual event for another two years. The biggest annual event in football occurred at US Bank Stadium on February 4, 2018, when the now iconic venue cemented its role as the epicenter for Super Bowl LII. The grandeur of the occasion drew a colossal gathering of 67,612 NFL football fans, and just shy of 6,000 esteemed credentialed media professionals. As the stadium is one of the more modern venues, it's already well known for superior waste management, energy conservation, and the most up-to-date heating and cooling options available. It's truly a modern and massive landmark in Minneapolis Minnesota.
